Coaxium

A rare, naturally-occurring form of hypermatter mined on a handful of worlds, refined into the fuel that coats a starship's hyperdrive reaction chamber and makes travel through hyperspace possible.

Where it occurs

Mined on worlds including Kessel, where it occurs in a form unstable enough that the mine's own extraction site has to be kept permanently heated simply to stop the raw material detonating on its own.

How it's obtained

Extracted directly from the ground in its raw, unrefined state on Kessel and transported, under careful temperature control, for refining elsewhere -- Solo depicts a raw canister being moved off-world rather than any refining process itself.

Properties

Highly volatile in its unrefined state: it explodes if jostled or allowed to overheat, and once mined it begins to destabilise, turning red before detonating if not kept in a temperature-controlled environment. Only once refined is it stable enough to store or transport safely at room temperature.

Why it's valuable

Essential to interstellar travel itself -- no starship can enter hyperspace without a hyperdrive reaction chamber coated in coaxium -- which makes even a single unrefined canister valuable enough to justify the heist plot of an entire film.

Uses

Used exclusively as starship hyperdrive fuel; Solo's plot turns on a desperate improvised use of raw, unrefined coaxium to power an escape from a gravitational anomaly, exploiting the very instability that normally makes it so dangerous to handle.

Canon & adaptations

Coaxium and its mining on Kessel are a creation of Solo (2018) and current Star Wars canon. Older, pre-2014 Expanded Universe material (now 'Legends', non-canon) described a different substance called 'spice' -- most famously glitterstim -- as Kessel's product instead, a psychoactive drug rather than a starship fuel. The two are not the same substance and this record does not treat them as interchangeable; 'spice' survives in current canon only as a generic term for illicit drugs generally, unconnected to Kessel specifically as of the sources checked here.
