Overview

The Yukon placer claim where a young Scrooge McDuck made his first real fortune during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-97, established in Carl Barks's original comics and expanded by Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

History

Scrooge McDuck travelled to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, arriving in Dawson in 1896-97. After losing money in a barfight, he borrowed from the loan shark Soapy Slick to fund his prospecting. He found and staked a claim in an unexplored valley behind a glacier, on a creek that became known as White Agony Creek, and eventually discovered a single enormous gold nugget there — the Goose Egg Nugget — which made him a millionaire for the first time, around age 32. The claim, and Scrooge's later return to it in Don Rosa's 2006 story The Prisoner of White Agony Creek (in which his old flame Goldie O'Gilt is taken there), are the fullest account of the mine given in the comics. This is distinct from Scrooge's famous Number One Dime, which he earned as a boy in Scotland roughly two decades earlier by shining a customer's shoes for an American dime he chose to keep rather than spend — the two are separate milestones in his rise to wealth, not the same event.

Workings

Worked as a placer claim by hand — panning and washing loose creek gravel for gold rather than any underground digging; the comics do not describe machinery or a fixed camp beyond Scrooge's own cabin near the creek.

Closure

Not depicted as exhausted or formally closed — Scrooge leaves the Yukon once his fortune is made, and later returns to the same claim in The Prisoner of White Agony Creek.

What became of it

Fictional — no real-world site, though White Agony Creek is presented in the comics as one of the many real creeks worked during the actual historical Klondike Gold Rush.

Canon & adaptations

Originates in Carl Barks's 1952 story Back to the Klondike; the mine and claim detail used here comes chiefly from Don Rosa's later, more detailed The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (King of the Klondike, 1987, and The Prisoner of White Agony Creek, 2006). The 1987 and 2017 DuckTales television adaptations were not checked against this account for this pass.
