Overview

A diamond mine on the Angola-Zaire border in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, worked using forced Mbele labour and a squad of imprisoned Mbele child soldiers, sold to Western corporations by the local Buta administration — and a site the player character can infiltrate to rescue the children held there.

History

Kungenga Mine sits on the Angola-Zaire border within the game's fictionalised 1984 setting. The local Buta administration exploits forced labour from the Mbele minority there, selling the mined diamonds on to Western corporations. A squad of Mbele child soldiers, led by a boy named Shabani, is held prisoner at the mine and forced to work; Venom Snake, the player character, can infiltrate the site during the game's Angola-Zaire campaign and rescue them into his own private military company, Diamond Dogs. The game's writers reportedly made the surrounding region deliberately polluted and gloomy in appearance to emphasise how non-African powers were, in the game's own framing, parasitic on African mineral resources.
