Overview

An abandoned mine in Kentucky Route Zero, flooded when a working broke into an underground lake and the Consolidated Power Company's rationed electricity could not run the pumps. Conway and Shannon Márquez cross it by tram in Act I; its dead haunt the rest of the game.

History

Elkhorn Mine belonged to the Consolidated Power Company, which treated its workers badly and rationed the mine's electricity. Miners paid for their own safety equipment, buying canaries and respirators with company tokens, and paid to run the ventilation fans. Shannon Márquez's parents worked there, and the parents of her cousin Weaver, folk-song archivists, built a stage underground to record the miners' songs. When a working broke into an underground lake the mine flooded; there was not enough power to start the pumps, the trapped men turned off every light to save it, and still they drowned. Weaver's parents escaped; Shannon's did not. Consolidated Power later sent a crew of robots to drain the workings.

Workings

Narrow tunnels served by an electric tram running on a track under an overhead power line, with a turntable at the centre of the mine; the branches lead to the archivists' stage, a broken track ending in a heap of miners' helmets, the collapsed entrance and a dead end hard against the Zero.

Closure

Flooded when miners broke into an underground lake; with power rationed, the pumps could not be run and the trapped men drowned. The mine was never reopened.

What became of it

Abandoned and partly collapsed. In Act I Conway's sound test with the PA system brings down the entrance, injuring his leg, and he and Shannon leave by another way. Ridden with the tram's lamp off, the tunnels show the shadows of miners walking towards the exit.

Canon & adaptations

The game tells Elkhorn's history mainly through Shannon's dialogue and the objects left in the tunnels, and the sources read summarise them rather than quote them. The toll of twenty-eight comes from the Act IV memorial as reported in one essay. The sources disagree on which Márquez parents died: the wiki says Shannon's parents died and Weaver's escaped, while one essay says only that members of the Márquez family drowned.
