Context During active mining

Cause

Miners, or an unattended machine, bored through into an underground lake.

Contributing factors

Consolidated Power rationed the mine's electricity, so there was not enough power to start the pumps; the company also made miners buy their own safety equipment with company scrip.

What happened

Water from an underground lake broke into the workings of Elkhorn Mine. The trapped miners could not get the pumps going on the rationed power and turned off all their lights to save it, but even that was not enough, and they drowned. Among the dead were the parents of Shannon Márquez; her cousin Weaver's parents, folk-song archivists recording the miners underground, escaped. The mine was abandoned, and Consolidated Power later sent a crew of robots to drain it.

Memorials & commemoration

A memorial to the disaster stands beside the underground Echo River, seen in Act IV.

Canon & adaptations

The game gives the story through dialogue and the objects left in the mine; the sources read summarise them. No date is given.
