Overview

Coal mining is the entire economy of District 12 in Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games trilogy — dangerous, poorly regulated work that killed Katniss Everdeen's father in a mine explosion — but the books never name a specific mine, describing only 'the mines' as a district-wide institution rather than a single site.

History

District 12 is Panem's coal-mining district, built in the ruins of what was once Appalachia. Coal mining is presented as effectively the district's only industry, and a dangerous one: cave-ins and explosions are treated as a routine hazard of the work rather than a rare catastrophe. When Katniss Everdeen was eleven, her father, Burdock 'Burdie' Everdeen, was killed in a mine explosion alongside the father of her friend Gale Hawthorne, plunging both families into poverty and pushing Katniss into illegal hunting in the woods beyond the district's fence to keep her mother and sister fed. Not one of the source novels ever names an individual mine — every reference is to 'the mines' as the district's collective economic institution, the same 'district-wide activity, no single named site' pattern already noted elsewhere in this section (see the Corel Mines record, by contrast, which does name a specific site).
