The Corel Mines

Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

Overview

Coal mines on Mt. Corel that supported the small mining town of Corel for generations, until Shinra Electric Power Company's Mako reactor project — built to replace them — ended in disaster and the destruction of the town itself.

History

Corel's coal mines had been worked by its townsfolk 'for generations,' in the words of miner Dyne, who led local opposition when Shinra proposed building a Mako reactor at Corel as coal fell out of use elsewhere on the planet. Barret Wallace, Dyne's closest friend, argued in favour of the reactor — partly so his wife Myrna would no longer have to endure the mining town's poverty — and, over Dyne's objections, the town voted to accept it. Shinra representative Scarlet personally guaranteed the townspeople's livelihood once the reactor was complete.

Workings

Beyond being described as coal mines worked by hand 'for generations,' the mines' own workings are not detailed on screen — the story's focus throughout is on the reactor built alongside them and its consequences, not on the mining operation itself.

Closure

See Disasters, below, for the reactor explosion that ended mining at Corel and led to the destruction of the town.

What became of it

The original mine and town site were abandoned after the disaster and later built over; the Gold Saucer amusement park now sits on Mt. Corel above them, and a portion of the old town's remains form the underground Corel Prison. Surviving townspeople resettled nearby as North Corel, many still former coal miners with no mine left to work.

Canon & adaptations

The original 1997 game establishes Corel's coal mines only through dialogue and Barret's flashback narration, without a separate explorable mine location. The 2024 remake Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reportedly adds an explorable 'Corel Coal Mines' dungeon area; this could not be independently verified this pass and is not drawn on here.
