The Mako reactor built at Corel to replace the town's coal mines exploded while under Shinra's operation. Shinra publicly blamed the disaster on the townspeople, accusing them of sabotage by a rebel faction, and its troops burned the town to the ground in response — killing most of its population, including Barret Wallace's wife Myrna and Dyne's wife Eleanor.

Cause

The original script attributes the event only to 'an explosion at a reactor,' without stating a mechanical cause. Shinra publicly blamed it on sabotage by 'a rebel faction' — a claim the story frames as false, used to justify Shinra's subsequent destruction of the town.

What happened

Barret and Dyne, the mine's most prominent coal miners and the two men most responsible for the town's vote to accept the reactor, were away from Corel for a few days when it exploded. Shinra troops burned the town to the ground immediately afterward, publicly blaming the accident on the townspeople. Recalling the event, Barret says only that 'all the townspeople... all my relatives... everyone... everything' was lost. Enough people survived to later found the refugee settlement of North Corel nearby, many of whom blame Barret personally for having championed the reactor deal in the first place.

Aftermath
