Overview

An excavation on the ruined Centra continent, run by Esthar and reached in a flashback sequence long before the main story. What is being dug for is never said on screen: the player walks through a working dig guarded by Esthar soldiers and is told nothing. The connection made afterwards — that this is where the Crystal Pillar came out of the ground, and that the mobile fortress Lunatic Pandora was built around it — is the game's own later revelation read backwards onto the site, and it is worth being precise about which half of that is stated and which is inferred.

History

Centra was destroyed by a Lunar Cry, a fall of monsters from the moon, which left most of the continent a crater. The Crystal Pillar came down in that fall. Esthar — the technologically dominant nation in the setting, then under the sorceress Adel — opened an excavation on Centra, and it is this dig that Laguna, Kiros and Ward pass through in the flashback sequence: soldiers on guard, machinery running, and a party of soldiers who have no idea what they are walking through. Laguna's own reaction to the excavated stone is to wonder aloud whether it is natural rock, and the reply he gets is that nobody knows or cares. What the dig produced was ultimately turned into a weapon: Lunatic Pandora, a vast mobile structure built around the Crystal Pillar and designed by Dr Odine under Adel, capable of drawing a Lunar Cry down deliberately.

Workings

The site is presented as an industrial dig rather than an archaeological one — cut rock, spoil, plant and lift access into the excavation, worked by a nation with the resources of Esthar behind it. Nothing in the game describes the method or the depth in the terms a real mine record would use, and the excavation's product is a single object rather than a tonnage of anything.

Closure

The dig ends with the object recovered. Esthar's later government, after Adel was overthrown, sank Lunatic Pandora in the sea to put it beyond use — Laguna's group had wanted the Crystal Pillar dumped into the ocean for exactly that reason. Seventeen years on, Galbadia raised it again, and it was moved to Tears' Point to do what it had been built to do.

What became of it

Abandoned. When the site can be revisited in the main story it is a disused excavation on an empty continent, its machinery still standing and the ground around it long since worked out. Its product is elsewhere by then — flying.

Canon & adaptations

The game is much vaguer than the summaries of it. In the excavation sequence itself, nothing is said about what is being dug up, why, or for whom beyond the presence of Esthar soldiers. Later, Zell states plainly that the Galbadian military excavated Lunatic Pandora from the ocean where Esthar had sunk it, and Dr Odine says he has been investigating it since it was excavated — but 'excavated' in those lines refers to raising it from the sea, not to the Centra dig. That the Centra excavation is where the Crystal Pillar came from is a reading assembled from the chronology, the shared architecture of the two locations and Esthar's involvement in both; it is how the reference works and the fan wikis present it, and it is almost certainly what is intended, but it is inference rather than a line of dialogue.
