Aegis VII Mining Colony

Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

Overview

The Concordance Extraction Corporation's illegal mining colony on the quarantined planet Aegis VII, set up in 2505 to prepare a section of crust for lifting by the planet-cracker USG Ishimura. Its excavations uncovered an alien Marker in 2508, and the colony fell to madness and to the Necromorphs before the planet itself was wrecked.

History

Aegis VII held an unusually rich store of precious metals under its crust, but the Cygnus system had been closed to travel since a government Marker experiment there at the end of the 23rd century. In 2505 the Concordance Extraction Corporation ignored the quarantine and built a mining colony to prepare the planet for cracking: a lightly built ring of settlement around the excavation site, with gravity tethers to hold the cut section once the Ishimura lifted it into orbit. The colony manager, Hanford Carthusia, was secretly a Unitologist. In 2508 a team sent to investigate seismic activity found drilling scars left by an obsolete E-34 rig and unearthed Marker 3A. After the Marker was moved, the colonists suffered insomnia, hallucinations and violence, fifty Unitologists killed themselves in Union Square, and when the planet crack began the Necromorphs rose from the dead. An overloaded evacuation shuttle crashed into the shuttle bay, stranding the survivors; the colony was overrun, and was finally destroyed when the tectonic chunk dislodged by the planet crack fell back onto the planet.

Workings

The planet-cracking method: a year of prospecting and colony building, about eighteen months of tectonic excavation and gravity-tether work around the site, then, once the planet cracker arrives, about a week of preparation and a day to haul the cut chunk of crust into a stable orbit for processing, shedding billions of tons of debris into a temporary ring. The colony itself had an excavation site, gravity-tether computer, control and core rooms, storage for mining equipment and ore, landing pads, a medical lab and Planetside Security headquarters.

Closure

Destroyed in 2508. The Marker-driven outbreak killed or transformed the colonists, and the tectonic chunk dislodged by the planet crack crashed onto the surface.

What became of it

Destroyed, along with the planet's surface, at the end of the first Dead Space game.

Canon & adaptations

The colony's fall is told across Dead Space, its animated prequel Downfall, the prequel game Extraction and the 2023 remake, which adds detail (such as Hammond's line on the find's value). Wikipedia's summary ties the illegal operation to the Church of Unitology's search for the Marker; the wiki's account presents the discovery as accidental. Both are kept.
