Fall of the Aegis VII colony

The collapse of the Concordance Extraction Corporation's illegal mining colony on Aegis VII in 2508, after its excavations uncovered Marker 3A: mass psychosis, killings and suicides, the rise of the Necromorphs, and finally the fall of the cracked-out section of crust onto the planet.

Cause

The excavation of Marker 3A, an alien artefact, whose influence drove the colonists to psychosis and whose presence brought the Necromorph infection.

Contributing factors

The colony was illegal, on a planet quarantined for two centuries; its manager was a secret Unitologist; the planet-crack operation left a tectonic chunk suspended above the surface.

What happened

A team sent to investigate seismic activity near the colony uncovered Marker 3A in 2508. Once it was moved, much of the population suffered insomnia, depression, hallucinations and growing violence, and killings strained the colony's doctors and security. Fifty Unitologists killed themselves in Union Square, and after the planet crack the Necromorphs rose from the dead. An overloaded evacuation shuttle crashed into the shuttle bay, destroying the remaining shuttles and stranding the survivors; the few craft that escaped carried the infection to the Ishimura. The colony was overrun, and was finally destroyed when the tectonic chunk dislodged by the planet crack fell back onto Aegis VII.

Canon & adaptations

Told across Dead Space, Dead Space: Downfall, Dead Space: Extraction and the 2023 remake; the sources disagree on whether the Marker's discovery was accidental or the hidden aim of the operation.
