Runite Ore

Fictional record. This page describes a mining commodity from a fictional setting, not a real material. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

SettingRuneScape (Jagex)

A strange blue-tinged ore, the strongest tier of common metal in RuneScape's world, mined from rock deposits including those beneath the dwarven city of Keldagrim.

Where it occurs

Occurs as mineable rock outcrops scattered across the world, generally in small numbers per site and in remote or dangerous locations reflecting its rarity; Keldagrim's own mines contain a small number of runite deposits alongside far more common ores.

How it's obtained

Mined directly from rock outcrops using a pickaxe, exactly like every other ore in the game's world, requiring a high level of skill (Mining level 50) to extract successfully; refined by smelting it together with a separate, harder-to-obtain ore called luminite to produce usable rune metal, worked at level 50 Smithing.

Properties

Known to the dwarves since ancient times, but originally dismissed as worthless: on its own, smelted metal from runite alone proved weak and had no practical use. Its real properties only emerged once Saradominist dwarves in the Second Age discovered that smelting runite together with luminite produced a metal that projects an invisible energy field, damaging and disrupting anything that comes into sudden contact with it.

Why it's valuable

The resulting rune metal became the byword for high-quality war-gear in RuneScape's world: rune weapons deal exceptional damage and rune armour deflects lesser weapons effectively, making runite one of the most consistently valuable ores an adventurer can mine throughout the game's standard early-to-mid progression.

Uses

Smelted with luminite into rune bars, then smithed into rune weapons and armour -- the signature high-tier equipment tier that RuneScape players spend much of the game's early content working toward.
