| Setting | Dungeons & Dragons (Wizards of the Coast) |
One of the three kinds of dragonshard in the Eberron campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons: translucent crystals, generally dark blue or black with pulsing veins of colour, found in the deep caverns of Khyber, the world beneath the world, and prized for their affinity with binding magic.
Where it occurs
Beneath the surface of Eberron, in the deep caverns of Khyber, whose one export is the shards. Khyber is reached by rare passageways, among them Cazhaak Draal in Droaam, the Goradra Gap in the Mror Holds, the Pyramid of Ebon Flame in Xen'drik and the depths below the city of Sharn, and those who hunt the shards have reason to seek them out. The setting's creator Keith Baker has posited that the deep mines of Zilargo, publicly known for its jewels, are among the richest sources of Khyber shards in Khorvaire. The other two kinds are found elsewhere: golden Siberys shards fall from the ring in the sky and are gathered on the surface, and pink Eberron shards lie in egg-shaped nodules under the soil and swamp muck.
How it's obtained
Khyber shards are the most dangerous of the three to obtain, not because they are the rarest but because of what lives in Khyber. Those who go after them must find a way down and work in the dark among fiends and aberrations. Prospecting for dragonshards generally is the business of House Tharashk, whose dragonmark locates them and whose prospector's rod turned that power into an industrial trade; Baker places the rise of that trade within the last century, as demand grew faster than the surface deposits could meet.
Properties
Dark blue or black, translucent, veined with pulsing colour. Where Siberys shards amplify magical energy, Khyber shards bind it, which makes them the material for items that hold, disable or block.
Why it's valuable
The elemental-bound vehicles of Khorvaire, the lightning rail and the airships among them, depend on a bound elemental held in a Khyber shard. Baker's commentary adds that the shard must first be alchemically altered, and that the gnomes of Zilargo hold both the technique and a stockpile, which is why the great artificers of House Cannith buy their elemental binding from Zilargo rather than make their own. In the deep history of the setting the overlords of the Age of Demons remain imprisoned in dragonshards.
Uses
Binding: elementals into the lightning rail, airships and elemental galleons, and energies into items that disable or block. Dragonshards of all three kinds go into magic items, artifacts and constructs, and are important to much of the magical technology of the Five Nations.
Canon & adaptations
The shards appear in the setting's third-edition, fourth-edition and fifth-edition books and in its novels, and the clean statement that Siberys shards amplify while Khyber shards bind comes from the novel The City of Towers rather than a rulebook. Baker's blog goes beyond the published books: the Zilargo mines and the altered-shard requirement are offered as his own take, and he says so.
Recorded claims
Each claim is marked with its basis — explicit canon, MineArchive inference, adaptation only, or fandom interpretation — and attached to the source(s) below. Where tellings disagree, both are kept.
- Khyber dragonshards are generally dark blue or black and are found beneath the surface of Eberron in deep underground caverns. (MineArchive inference) 1
- Khyber shards are the most dangerous of the three kinds to obtain because of the creatures that live in Khyber. (MineArchive inference) 1
- Khyber shards have an affinity for binding and are the material of bound-elemental items such as the lightning rail. (MineArchive inference) 1
- The overlords imprisoned at the end of the Age of Demons remain bound in dragonshards deep in Khyber. (MineArchive inference) 2
- Keith Baker posits that Zilargo's deep mines, behind its public jewel trade, are one of the richest sources of Khyber shards in Khorvaire, and that elemental binding needs a Khyber shard altered by alchemy. (MineArchive inference, uncertain) 3
- House Tharashk's industrial prospecting for dragonshards is, by its creator's account, a development of the last century, driven by rising demand and the invention of the prospector's rod. (MineArchive inference) 4
