Hylton Colliery at Castletown closed in 1979, but the cricket club its miners founded in 1906 is still playing; the colliery's welfare football club played in the Wearside League and sent players into the professional game, two of them to Sunderland and West Ham United.
The mining history in this record
Hylton Colliery was sunk from 1897 and opened in 1900 at Castletown on the north bank of the Wear, and by the 1920s employed nearly two thousand people — the spine of employment for the district.
The miners ran a cricket club, founded in 1906 as Hylton Colliery Cricket Club. The colliery welfare football club, Hylton Colliery Welfare, played in the Wearside League. Among its players were Augie Scott and Ernie Taylor, and its junior side produced Harry Hooper and Bill Robinson, both of whom went on to play for Sunderland and West Ham United.
People
Augie Scott and Ernie Taylor, who played for Hylton Colliery Welfare in the Wearside League. Harry Hooper and Bill Robinson, who came through the club's junior side and went on to Sunderland and West Ham United.
Legacy today
The colliery was cleared after closing on 13 July 1979 and nothing of it survives on the ground. The cricket club does: more than a hundred years old, it still plays at Castletown as Hylton Colliery Cricket Club, in the Durham and North East Cricket League.
