Steatite

A soft, talc-rich metamorphic rock, also called soapstone or — in Shetland, from the Old Norse — kleber. Soft enough to carve with simple tools when freshly quarried, it hardens on exposure to air and heat, expands little on heating and resists thermal shock, which made it the material of choice for cooking vessels, lamps and loom weights before pottery and metal displaced it.
