Herefordshire's mining is small, old and easily missed: iron ore worked out of cave-like openings in the Carboniferous limestone of the Wye gorge on the county's southern edge, where the Forest of Dean orefield crosses the river, along with limestone quarried and burnt for lime. Nothing here approached industrial scale, and the workings that survive are archaeology rather than infrastructure.
