Lucy Thomas

Born Lucy Williams and baptised at Llansamlet on 11 March 1781, she married Robert Thomas in 1802 and took over the running of his Waun Wyllt level after his death in 1833, becoming known as the mother of the Welsh steam coal trade. She was illiterate and signed business documents with an X. Modern scholarship credits much of the commercial success to her Cardiff agent George Insole and the embellishment of her reputation to the historian Charles Wilkins, writing in 1888, though the business did grow more than tenfold in the fourteen years she ran it. She died of typhoid at Abercanaid on 27 September 1847 and was buried at the Unitarian chapel at Cefn-coed-y-cymmer.
