James Radley

A St Helens colliery owner who sank the first shafts at Lea Green in the early 1870s and also held Nutgrove, Thatto Heath and Sutton Heath collieries. He was made the fourth mayor of St Helens in 1873 and served three successive terms, opening the new town hall in 1876 and presenting the corporation with a gold chain of office and the parish church with a clock. He took a ten-year lease on Sherdley Hall in 1881 and died there on 28 March 1885, aged 75.
