Hugh Lee Pattinson

Tyneside lead manufacturer and chemist, remembered for the cupellation process for desilvering lead that carries his name. In 1846 he took the first recorded lease of Dry Gill Mine on the Caldbeck Fells, drove an adit on the vein where it crosses Dry Gill beck near the foot of the gill, and raised a few hundred tons of the mimetite the miners called coloured lead ore before giving the work up in the 1850s.
