William Stenson
Mining engineer (1770-1861) who carried out the trial borings that proved coal at Whitwick from 1822, founding Stenson and Company to sink the colliery; he went on to found the Leicester and Swannington Railway to carry the colliery's coal, recruiting George Stephenson as an investor and Robert Stephenson as engineer. Known as 'the father of Coalville', the town that grew up around his colliery.
