Viscount Maynard

The Bagworth landowner who had the colliery’s first shaft sunk in the late 1820s and who, when the Leicester and Swannington Railway’s powers to build a branch to the pit were transferred to him, built the line at his own expense and opened it on 11 July 1832. The Maynards had endowed the village school at Bagworth in 1761.
