The company formed when the coal industry was nationalised in 1947 to take over the United Collieries' refractory, pipe and brick works at Armadale, which made Etna, Atlas and Atlas A firebricks from local fireclays mined at Drum, Northrigg, Tippethill and Pottishaw.
