Sir Francis Alexander Newdigate

Of Arbury Hall near Nuneaton, the colliery’s first owner and the man it was named for. The Newdigates had been linked with coal mining in Warwickshire for centuries; they began the Frank and Lilah shafts in 1898 and sold the colliery in 1914.
