A granite quarry lessee, previously of Craignair Quarry at Dalbeattie, who took a 21-year lease on Shap from the Lowther estate between 1864 and 1870 and formed the Shap and Dalbeattie Granite Company, putting the site into large-scale, continuous production for the first time.
