The Clydach firm founded by brothers Samuel and John Hill, sons of the boat-builder Samuel Hill senior, who added coal to the family's Swansea Valley Canal boat-building business by opening a colliery on Gelliwastad Mountain in 1860; controlled into the 20th century by William Hill of Swansea and managed by Samuel Hill.
