The Kerr family, Marquises of Lothian, of Newbattle Abbey, who owned three-quarters of Newbattle parish and worked its coal, lime and clay as a single estate undertaking from the late eighteenth century until it was reorganised as the Lothian Coal Company in 1890. James Davidson was manager and mining engineer through the 1860s. Recorded here in connection with Newbattle Collieries.
