Lord Granville
The Granville family — Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville, and from 1846 his son the 2nd Earl — held the Duchy of Lancaster's copyhold coal under Hanley and Shelton and worked it, with the ironstone beneath, through the Shelton concern that became the Shelton Iron, Steel and Coal Company in 1889. Far Green was one of dozens of Shelton pits; the Inspector's 1859 inquiry was into 'Lord Granville's works'.
