Llay Main Collieries Ltd.

The company formed to sink and work Llay Main, and the reason the village of Llay exists in its present form. It began the shafts in 1914 on the bet that reserves nobody else would go deep enough for could be worked profitably, saw the sinking halted by the Home Office through the war, and finally drew coal in 1923 — then sold the colliery three years later.
