John Nowell & Son

The Wednesbury firm that bought Haunchwood in the early 1850s after its own Oakwood Colliery in Staffordshire was worked out. John Nowell died with the sinking still in progress in 1851; his son William completed it, kept the company name, brought the colliery into production in 1855 and installed the Gillett system himself in the 1870s to work the coal down the dip.
