John Howe and Company

Founded in 1838 by John Howe, a Carlisle solicitor, as alabaster dealers and makers of plaster of paris. In partnership with the Cotehill landowner John Pigg it opened quarries near Cotehill and, in the early 1860s, at Cocklakes, building a mill there about 1864 and taking a siding off the Settle-Carlisle railway in 1876. It was amalgamated into the Carlisle Plaster and Cement Company in 1911.
