John Henry Iles

John Henry Iles (1871-1951), the entrepreneur behind the Crystal Palace and Belle Vue brass band contests and later the Dreamland amusement park at Margate, bought Clandown Colliery outright in March 1917 as a rare venture outside his usual business interests; the mine lost money throughout his ownership, and he sold it to Sir Frank Beauchamp in December 1924.
