James Stedman Dixon
Glasgow mining engineer (1850-1911) who leased Bent Colliery, Hamilton, in 1872 and formed the Bent Colliery Company to work it and, from 1884, Hamilton Palace Colliery. President of the Mining Institute of Scotland and of the Institution of Mining Engineers, a member of the Royal Commission on Coal Supplies, and founder of the chair of mining at Glasgow University.
