J. Vipond and Company Limited

The company of John Vipond, who came from Cheshire by way of the Midland coalfield and opened the Rock Vein Colliery in the Varteg area in 1840. It worked the Varteg Hill and Lower Varteg collieries above the Afon Lwyd in Monmouthshire, with a railway branch to Blaenavon Junction, a zig-zag railway of five reverses and an incline down to Cwmavon, until nationalisation in 1947.
