Haunchwood Colliery Company Limited
Formed in 1881 when the younger William Nowell put the business on the market, retaining 49 per cent of the shares. Sir Alfred Hickman, the Wolverhampton coal owner and ironmaster, was a leading shareholder and became managing director, and average output trebled under the investment programme that followed. The company acquired the mineral rights for the whole of Galley Common and sank Tunnel Colliery, which by 1895 employed 817 men underground.
