Firth, Bamber and Company

The owner of the Oaks Colliery at the time of the explosions of 12–13 December 1866, which killed 361 men and boys and remain the worst mining disaster in England. Contemporary accounts of 1866 give the firm this spelling, against Firth, Barber and Company at the same pit in 1847; whether that marks a genuine change of partner or a mis-spelling that stuck is not settled by the surviving record.
