Founded by the engineer John Robinson McLean with William Chawner, leasing mineral rights from the Marquis of Anglesey; operated around ten pits in the Chasewater area, including No. 8, until nationalisation in 1947. Hammerwich Colliery is recorded as its own between 1875 and 1880.
