Benjamin Davies (Cross Knave)

Acquired sole interest in the Cross Knave gale from his father on 1 June 1866 and is returned as the owner in the official 1880 list of collieries at work. In May 1873 a coroner’s jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against him after the death of fifteen-year-old George Nelmes, there having been no proper arrangement for working the gib at the pit top, and he was committed for trial. He was still in dispute with the landowner about erecting a steam engine around 1908.
