Created in 1934 under United Steel Companies from the 1912 merger of the Appleby and Frodingham iron companies, and the dominant steelmaker of the district — heavy plate and sections from integrated blast furnaces and rolling mills, fed for four decades on the ironstone under its own doorstep.
