Overview
A coal mine and the frontier town built around it, exploited by a corrupt military officer who taxed the miners into poverty until a teenage Edward Elric, on his first assignment as a State Alchemist, exposed him and ended his hold over the town.
History
Youswell's mine and town were, by law, the personal property of First Lieutenant Yoki, who used that ownership to squeeze the townspeople — repeatedly raising taxes while capping miners' wages to enrich himself, effectively bankrupting the whole town.
Workings
Little is given about the mine's physical workings beyond its output of coal; the story's focus is on Yoki's exploitation of the miners rather than the extraction itself.
What became of it
Edward Elric, sent to inspect the mine as his first State Alchemist assignment, tricked Yoki into wagering — and losing — his ownership of the mine and town on a rigged bet, then reported his corruption to the military. Edward went on to buy the land himself and sell it to Halling, the mine's foreman and the proprietor of the town's inn, returning ownership to the community.
Canon & adaptations
The core Youswell arc appears in both Hiromu Arakawa's manga (Chapter 3) and the 2003 anime adaptation (Episode 9) in closely similar form. The manga alone returns to Youswell twice more later in the story (Chapters 32 and 80), when the visiting alchemist May Chang becomes involved with the town — material with no equivalent in the 2003 anime, which follows its own diverging storyline after its early episodes.
