Overview
A Klingon dilithium-mining labour camp on a frozen penal asteroid, used to imprison enemies of the Empire for life. James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy are sentenced here after being framed for the assassination of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon.
History
Kirk and McCoy are sentenced by a Klingon court to 'the dilithium mines on the penal asteroid of Rura Penthe, there to spend the rest of your natural lives,' a facility described as known throughout the galaxy as 'the aliens' graveyard.'
Workings
The camp has no conventional security — no stockade, guard tower, or perimeter fence — relying instead on a magnetic shield to prevent transporter escape and on the lethal cold of the asteroid's surface itself to deter fleeing prisoners. Survival depends directly on labour output, per the camp's own stated policy: work well and be treated well, work badly and die.
What became of it
Kirk and McCoy escape with help from a shapeshifting fellow inmate, Martia, who guides them to a weak point in the magnetic shield during a work shift before betraying them; they are beamed to safety by the USS Enterprise before the cold kills them.
