Rigel XII lithium mines

Overview

The lithium mine of three lonely men on a dust-storm planet, where the Enterprise, down to its last cracked crystal, found that the price of fuel was Harry Mudd's three women.

History

In 'Mudd's Women' (1966) the Enterprise burns out its lithium crystal circuits chasing Harry Mudd's ship through an asteroid belt, and Spock recalls a lithium mining operation on Rigel XII, high-grade ore by report, less than two days away. The mine is worked by three men, Ben Childress, Gossett and Benton, who have been on the planet alone for almost three years. Mudd, under guard aboard the ship, learns as much from the crew and sees his chance: three lonely, overworked, rich miners and his three women, with lithium crystals worth, in his telling, three hundred times their weight in diamonds.

Rigel XII is dust and wind, sandstorms that can lose a man a dozen feet from his door, worse when a magnetic storm is running; water is scarce. By the time the ship reaches orbit its last crystal is gone and it has power for a few days. Childress, beamed up to bargain, refuses to sell the crystals for anything but the women and Mudd's freedom, and Kirk, with no landing party able to find a crystal the miners have hidden, gives way. Eve McHuron walks out of the miners' camp into a storm, Childress goes after her, and the two are found in his quarters eleven miles from the company camp when the storm eases. Kirk takes the crystals at the end, after Eve has chosen to stay.

The episode belongs to the first weeks of the series, when the ship's fuel was lithium; within the season it became dilithium, and the Rigel XII operation is one of the few named mines of that first idea.

Workings

Not described; a mining company camp, three miners' quarters and the crystals themselves are all the episode shows.

Closure

Not closed within canon.

What became of it

Working at the end of the episode, with Childress and Eve McHuron staying on; the planet is not revisited.

Canon & adaptations

The episode calls the mineral lithium; the series renamed it dilithium within its first season, and later canon treats dilithium as the ship's fuel. Memory Alpha classes the planet M from the Star Trek Encyclopedia and notes Star Charts' H class; the draft script also made the climate very hot.
