Pyramid Mine

Overview

The Pyramid Mine is the sealed turbinium mine under Mount Pyramid on Mars in Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall, the place where Cohaagen's administration found alien artefacts and closed the workings rather than let the discovery out. Turbinium is the ore on which Earth's war effort depends and on which Cohaagen's power rests: 'as long as the terbinium keeps flowing, I can do anything I want'. Inside the mountain the artefacts prove to be a reactor half a million years old that, started, will melt the planet's ice core into a breathable atmosphere and end the monopoly on air. Quaid fights his way down through the mine to the reactor at the film's end and turns it on.

History

The film's first news broadcast sets the scene: terrorists demanding independence 'once again halted the extraction of terbinium ore', Kuato's 'freedom brigade' claiming a bombing 'which attempted to reopen the sealed-off Pyramid Mines', and 'with one mine already closed' the Mars administrator Vilos Cohaagen vowing troops to keep production at full capacity. An interviewer puts the rumour to Cohaagen that he has 'closed the Pyramid Mine because you found alien artefacts'; he answers that he wishes he could find some, the tourist industry could use a boost, and that Kuato spreads the rumours. Mars, the broadcast says, 'was colonised by the northern block at enormous expense' and 'our entire war effort depends on their terbinium'. In Venusville a former miner tells Quaid that 'nobody on Earth gives a damn what happens up here. They just want our terbinium so they can fight their war', and that he worked in the Pyramid Mine until 'they found that alien shit inside'. Cohaagen tells Richter that he has 'the greatest job in the solar system' as long as the ore flows, and later declares martial law over damage to 'our mineral export operations'; the rebels take the refinery and 'no terbinium is going out'. The resistance believes Cohaagen 'found something weird inside and it's got him scared'. Kuato reads in Quaid's mind what it is: an alien reactor in the mines that makes air, which Cohaagen will not turn on because 'if Mars had an atmosphere, he'd lose control'. Quaid and Melina escape through the mines, kill Richter and the taxi driver Benny (with a mining drill), and reach the reactor chamber, where the core is a glacier: 'The reactor melts it and it releases the oxygen. Enough for the whole planet.' Cohaagen's charge breaches the chamber to the surface and kills him; Quaid starts the reactor and the sky turns blue.

Workings

Shown only as the setting of the climax: galleries and shafts cut into the mountain, mine trucks on rails, a drilling machine, and the reactor chamber itself, a vast artificial cavern lined with turbinium above the ice core. Nothing is said of how the ore was worked; the colony's economy is 'mineral export operations' with a refinery the rebels can seize.

Closure

Sealed by the administration on the discovery of the artefacts; the reactor within it is started at the film's end and Mars gains an atmosphere.

What became of it

At the film's end the mountain is breached and the reactor running; whether the mine is ever worked again is not shown.

Canon & adaptations

The transcript spells the ore 'terbinium' and Wikipedia 'turbinium'; the 'northern block' of the broadcast is the film's only naming of the power that colonised Mars, and the stub's 'Northern Bloc' operator does not appear as such. The film is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale', which has no Martian mine; Piers Anthony's 1990 novelisation and the 2012 remake are separate and not consulted. The film leaves open whether the Mars events are a Rekall implant.
