Overview

The Glukkons' bone mine cut into Necrum, the Mudokon necropolis of Eastern Mudos: enslaved Mudokons, their eyes stitched shut, dug up their own ancestors for SoulStorm Brew until Abe blew the boilers and emptied the place.

History

Necrum was the burial ground of the Mudokon tribes, a walled necropolis of urns, totems and temples in a jungle oasis, forgotten as the race dwindled under the Magog Cartel. It became a mine only because Abe had shut down RuptureFarms, the meat works whose by-product, Mudokon bones, was the secret ingredient of SoulStorm Brew. Deprived of that supply, the Glukkons opened Necrum Mines and sent Mudokon slaves to dig, their eyes stitched shut so that they would not know what they were digging up or why.

The operation was built like any Glukkon industry: a castle-like surface works among the old statues, two FeeCo Depot railway lines into the base of it to carry the bones out to the Bonewerkz, and below, dim and poorly serviced tunnels, shafts and caverns strung with lights and scaffolding, mine cars in the deep workings, and 75 Mudokon miners under Slig guard. The deepest shafts broke into older subterranean places, home to creatures the Mudokons thought extinct, and the vaults of the Mudomo and Mudanchee tribes beneath were overrun by Paramites and Scrabs.

Abe's Exoddus (1998) opens with Abe and his friends at Necrum, called there in a dream by three ancient Mudokon spirits who wanted the digging stopped. Abe worked through the mines rescuing the workforce, discovered from his friends' addiction why the bones were wanted, and ended the mine by overloading its five boilers at once, breaking through into the Necrum Jungle below.

Workings

Tunnels, shafts and caverns cut down through the burial grounds from a surface works among the Mudokon statues; lit and scaffolded, with wells and lifts between levels, laughing-gas pockets, electric fields and mines in the passages, mine cars in the deep tunnels and boilers at the bottom. The FeeCo railway carried the bones away.

Closure

Sabotage: Abe overloaded the mine's five boilers simultaneously and the facility blew up, after every Mudokon in it had been got out through the bird portals.

What became of it

Ruined at the end of Abe's Exoddus. Oddworld: Soulstorm (2021) retells the story with Necrum mined openly under the Bone Baron Morguer and a hidden Sanctum below.

Canon & adaptations

The Oddworld Wiki names the Magog Cartel as the mine's opener; the Oddworld Library names the SoulStorm Mining Company. In Abe's Exoddus the miners are blinded to keep the operation secret; in Soulstorm no such effort is made, the workers' eyes are open, and the place has a reputation as somewhere no Mudokon wants to go.
