Overview

A pergium mining colony that had operated for over fifty years before its miners began dying at the hands of an unknown creature, later revealed to be a Horta — an intelligent, silicon-based lifeform defending the last eggs of her entire species, which the miners had been unknowingly destroying.

History

The colony had been 'in operation for over fifty years' by the time of the crisis, supplying pergium — described as vital enough that 'a dozen planets depend on you for pergium.' A distress call reporting a mysterious creature killing miners and destroying equipment with a corrosive substance brought the USS Enterprise to investigate after fifty miners had already died.

Workings

Spock's mind-meld with the wounded creature reveals it to be a Horta, the sole survivor of the previous generation of an ancient, cyclical native species whose entire population dies but for one every fifty thousand years — the one left behind to guard the race's eggs until they hatch. The miners had been breaking into the Horta's nesting chamber and unknowingly destroying thousands of silicon nodules, which were in fact her eggs.

What became of it

Once the miners understand what they had been destroying, chief engineer Vanderberg and the Horta reach an agreement: the newly hatched Hortas, which can tunnel through solid rock far faster than any drilling equipment, will mine the planet's pergium deposits directly in partnership with the human colonists, who in turn leave the Horta's remaining eggs undisturbed.
