Overview

The entire hostile, cave-riddled planet mined by contracted dwarves for the mining corporation Deep Rock Galactic — the whole setting of the game of the same name, and the archive's first Fictional-section entry where the 'mine' is a planet rather than a single working.

History

Hoxxes IV's mineral deposits are extraordinarily rich even by the standards of its home system, but the planet is otherwise so hostile — electromagnetic storms, gravitational anomalies, tectonic instability, seas of sulfuric acid, and one of the most dangerous ecosystems in the setting — that only Deep Rock Galactic, a company known for disregarding safety precautions, is willing to keep operating there, drawing contract miners with high pay and bonuses. Its principal resource, Morkite, can solidify over time into 'Darkshard', a gem prized by off-world nobility. The creatures native to Hoxxes have grown more hostile and dangerous still under Creus's radiation and the biomatter left behind by earlier mining expeditions, and rumour within the game's own lore holds that older, more sinister things exist in the deepest excavations.

Workings

No single fixed mine layout — each expedition generates a new cave network procedurally across the planet's biome layers, from the frozen Glacial Strata near the surface down to the Magma Core at -11,500m, so Hoxxes IV is mined as a whole world rather than through one persistent set of workings.

What became of it

Ongoing — Deep Rock Galactic's mining operation on Hoxxes IV has no narrative endpoint; it is the game's standing setting rather than a story that resolves.

Canon & adaptations

Deep Rock Galactic tells almost none of its worldbuilding through a fixed narrative — most lore, including the detail used here, comes from in-game flavour text, Mission Control dialogue and developer patch notes rather than a scripted story, so 'canon' here is looser and more fragmentary than most entries in this section.
