Overview

The ore refinery and lead foundry on the prison planet Fiorina 161 in Alien 3 (1992): a Weyland-Yutani facility whose convict labourers worked the furnaces, closed down as a prison but still home to a few religious inmates when Ripley crash-lands there. The film ends in its foundry, where the alien is drowned in molten lead.

History

Fiorina 161 began, according to the expanded material, as a Weyland-Yutani commercial mining operation in 2118. In 2152 it became a maximum-security penal colony for 'double-Y chromosome' prisoners, whose labour ran the adjacent lead works, a foundry fired by natural methane; at its peak it held 5,000 men. The prison was closed down in 2175, leaving a handful of inmates, many of them followers of an apocalyptic faith, under a superintendent. When Ripley's escape pod crashed there with an alien aboard, the survivors lured the creature into the foundry's mould and poured molten lead onto it, then killed it with the fire sprinklers' thermal shock. Ripley threw herself into the furnace rather than let the Company take the queen embryo inside her; only the inmate Morse survived.

Workings

A lead foundry with a furnace, a moulding facility and a gantry over the mould, cooling towers and exhaust stacks, and an underground network of tunnels beneath the prison; the mining past is not shown in the film.

Closure

The penal colony was closed by the Company in 2175; the facility was abandoned after the deaths of almost all its remaining inmates.

What became of it

Abandoned after the events of Alien 3.

Canon & adaptations

The film shows a foundry and prison; that the site was first a mine, and the dates 2118, 2152 and 2175, come from Xenopedia's account of the novelisation and expanded material, which was not read directly. The IMSDb script titled Alien 3 is Vincent Ward's unproduced draft set on a wooden planet, Arceon, not the film, and is not used. The Assembly Cut differs in some events (Golic's and Junior's fates).
