Fossil Roo

Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

Overview

An underground tunnel system crossing between two continents, with a working excavation part-way along it. Fossil Roo is a transport route first and a mine second — the party is passing through — but the dig is real, staffed, and equipped: a miner will hand over a pickaxe in exchange for a potion and let anyone have a go at the rock face.

History

The tunnels are reached from Qu's Marsh, through an entrance nothing about the marsh advertises, and they come out on the far side near Conde Petie on the Outer Continent — a crossing otherwise made by airship or not at all. Nothing in the game explains who cut them or when. What it does show is that they are in use: an excavation is running inside them, with miners on site, a rock face being worked, and a trade in what comes out. Two moogles, Mogki and Kuppo, keep shops in the tunnels, the second of them found only after a rock wall is broken through.

Workings

Transport underground is by gargant — a giant mole-cricket-like insect that runs the roots threading the tunnels, ridden by holding on to its back. A gargant is called by holding up large yellow dandelion-like flowers picked along the route, and is steered not by reins but by fear: the animals will not cross water, so switches along the tunnels open valves that flood one root and leave another dry, sending the gargant down the route you want. A miner explains the trick in as many words — the gargants are afraid of water, so the streams can be used to redirect them. The excavation itself is worked by hand at a rock face. A miner gives out a pickaxe in return for a potion, and the same spots can be dug repeatedly: ordinary digs turn up Ore or potions, and rarely the Madain's Ring. Ore in this setting is a real commodity rather than scenery — it can be used in battle, traded, or taken to the synthesis shop at Daguerreo, where it is worked up into jewels that strengthen a summoner's eidolons, and where four ores make an aquamarine.

Closure

No closure: the dig is running when the party arrives and running when they leave. The tunnel's usefulness to the story ends once the party is across, and they never come back through it.

What became of it

Still working, so far as the game ever shows. Fossil Roo is a place passed through once, and nothing later in the story returns to it.

Canon & adaptations

The identification of the roots in the tunnels as the Iifa Tree's is a reference-work reading rather than something the Fossil Roo sequence states — what the game shows is great roots threaded through the tunnels and gargants running along them. The user's framing of this record as 'Fossil Roo Excavation / Qu's Marsh Excavation Site' merges two things the game keeps separate: Qu's Marsh is a surface location and the way in, the excavation is inside Fossil Roo itself. Both names are kept as aliases here for that reason.
