Connects to the Forgotten Crossroads (a toll-gated entrance, or a breakable floor reachable with the Desolate Dive/Descending Dark spells), to Resting Grounds via a one-way drop, and to Dirtmouth itself via a lift in its northwest corner.

Overview

Hallownest's crystal-mining mountain, once worked by a living bug workforce to supply the kingdom's cities with a luminous, faintly musical ore, and now worked by the same miners' reanimated, Infection-driven husks, still swinging their claw-picks at the crystal seams long after anyone was left to receive what they mine.

History

During Hallownest's prime, mines were carved into Crystal Peak to obtain the crystals native to it, which supplied the kingdom's cities with a constant supply of the material. The ore itself was valued for containing a kind of internal energy — in the words of the well-travelled bug Quirrel, 'not as powerful as the soul the city dwellers harnessed, but far less lethal' — and for its physical qualities: the crystals gleam and glow with a bright, searing heat, and, faintly, sing if listened to closely. Mining bugs worked the peak with claw-picks, assisted by creatures such as Shardmites and Glimbacks, which were used to haul carts and machinery through the tunnels. When the Infection spread through Hallownest, the mining workforce was not spared. Miners who died at the peak were reanimated as Husk Miners, their claw-picks now doubling as weapons, 'strong purpose... imprinted upon their husks' even in death, according to Quirrel, who finds the sight of them still labouring at their now-pointless task a sad one. Some miners' remains instead became encrusted in the crystal itself, appearing as stationary Crystallised Husks. Deep within the peak, older than the mining operation itself, stands the Crystallised Mound, an ancient temple used by an order of Snail Shamans for meditation; one shaman's 'fourth aunt' is said to have meditated there so long she became sealed within the crystal, her release granting the Descending Dark spell.

Workings

Worked as a network of tunnels driven into the mountain, connected by conveyor belts that once moved crystal shards through the workings; disused mining golems still occupy some eastern passages. A large crystal-guardian creature, encountered by later explorers, occupies a chamber near the mountain's heart, and the summit — called Hallownest's Crown — bears glyphs in an unknown script and a statue of the Radiance containing a fragment of Pale Ore.

Closure

Not narrated directly; understood as part of the Infection's general collapse of Hallownest's workforce and institutions rather than a discrete closure event of its own.

What became of it

Abandoned but structurally intact, its infrastructure still standing and its crystals still glowing; Infected Husk Miners and Crystallised Husks continue an endless, purposeless version of the original mining work. The bug Cornifer maps the area from a small camp, and Quirrel can be found resting in a room overlooking Dirtmouth.

Canon & adaptations

In early development, Crystal Peak was part of a larger Forgotten Crossroads area and known internally as the 'Crystal Mines', before Team Cherry split it off into its own distinct area under its current name — a development-history detail, not an in-fiction variant.
