Overview

A long-abandoned mine in Western Thanalan, worked centuries ago by enslaved giants and abandoned once its ore was exhausted, until a mining guild reopened its lower shafts in search of new veins and freed the same giants' descendants — the hecatoncheires — from three hundred years of imprisonment in its depths.

History

During the Sixth Astral Era, the Thorne Dynasty of Ul'dah enslaved a tribe of giants known as hecatoncheirs to work the mines, controlling them by way of enchanted helmets. In 1272, the enchantments broke for reasons the record does not give, and the hecatoncheirs rose against their masters in the Great Giant Revolt. Once purged of ore, the mines were abandoned and lay untouched for nigh on three centuries.

Workings

Amajina & Sons Mineral Concern reclaimed the shafts to expand the mines downward in search of undiscovered veins of valuable metal. Instead of ore, their powder kegs opened the way into the mines' darkest recesses — releasing the hecatoncheires, thralls of the lost Thorne Dynasty, still driven mad by three centuries of captivity.

What became of it

Adventurers were called in to clear the mines of the freed hecatoncheires so that Amajina & Sons' mining operations could resume; a later expedition found the mines were not fully cleared after all, with a crew of the guild's own engineers going missing mid-transmission in the deep shafts.
