Cloud City
Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.

Overview
A distinctly different Star Wars mining operation from the shaft-and-tunnel workings at Kessel: Cloud City is a mining colony in every functional sense, but Bespin's tibanna gas is drawn up out of the deep atmosphere of a gas giant by tractor-beam generators rather than dug from solid ground.
History
Cloud City is an outpost and tibanna gas mining colony administered, at the time of The Empire Strikes Back, by Lando Calrissian. Bespin is a gas giant whose habitable atmospheric band supports floating mining complexes built by 'enterprising prospectors' to extract valuable gases from deep within the planet. Generators on the underside of the city project tractor beams that converge below a central reactor bulb, creating a funnel of energy that draws tibanna gas up from Bespin's lower atmosphere; the gas is forced into the bulb, travels up a central reactor stalk, and is distributed into smaller reactor shafts for filtering through processing vanes. Because tibanna gas was highly coveted by the Galactic Empire, Lando lived in constant fear of Imperial discovery and takeover of his operation. That fear was realised when Darth Vader arrived at Cloud City seeking to use Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and C-3PO as bait to capture Luke Skywalker; Vader threatened to place Cloud City under permanent Imperial administration if Lando did not cooperate, forcing Lando into a reluctant betrayal of his guests before he ultimately turned against the Empire to help them escape.
Workings
A working tibanna gas extraction operation, its generators drawing gas up from the depths of Bespin's atmosphere through a reactor bulb and stalk system into the city's processing facilities, worked in part by a population of native Ugnaughts.
What became of it
Under Imperial occupation at the close of The Empire Strikes Back, following Vader's seizure of the city; its longer-term fate is not covered by the sources checked for this record.
Recorded claims
Each claim is marked with its basis — explicit canon, MineArchive inference, adaptation only, or fandom interpretation — and attached to the source(s) below. Where tellings disagree, both are kept.
- Cloud City's generators emit tractor beams that converge below the gas mine's reactor bulb, creating a funnel of energy that mines tibanna gas from Bespin's lower atmosphere; the gas travels up the reactor stalk into smaller reactor shafts for filtering. (explicit canon) 1
- Lando Calrissian administered Cloud City at the time of The Empire Strikes Back and betrayed his arriving guests to Darth Vader only after Vader threatened permanent Imperial control of the city, before ultimately turning against the Empire to help them escape. (explicit canon) 2
